If Togidubnus didn’t own the Palace who did? And why was it built?

Well, there are a few (admittedly not many) views that Fishbourne was not even Togidubnus’ Palace, although it does leave one wondering whether Client King Togidubnus felt snubbed by the subject of his who did own the Palace…Yet, even so there is a little evidence to imply that he may not be the owner.

1. Dr Miles Russell, who comments on a variety of aspects of Sussex life post AD43 (date of the Roman invasion) believes that Fishbourne was just the result of the Boudiccan uprising, when across Sussex “a series of wealthy civilian houses were being constructed”. This view potentially could be used to show that a wealthy citizen under Togidubnus’ rule built the Palace to elaborately showcase his substantial finances.
